Teachers need more resources, but strike action not the answer

WITH the threat of a strike hanging over Scottish schools if teachers are not given an extra 1½ hours during the school week for preparation and marking time, there will be rumblings of anxiety in all education authorities as to how the government's financial position can accommodate such a demand.

Teachers are under immense pressure, and expected to fill in the gaps created by the failure of parents to socialise their offspring to behave responsibly within school buildings.

Just look at the sick-leave rates among teachers and you can understand why so many are considering leaving the profession for the sake of their mental health.
