Switch to direct debit to power down energy bills

MILLIONS of households in Britain could knock £138 off their annual energy bill by switching to direct debit rather than paying bills after receiving their statement.

Some 3.4 million households, around one in six, choose the option to pay on receipt of bill, with pensioners more likely to do this but it’s pricier in practice.

Energy companies charge less for direct debit payments as an incentive to sign up, because they offer predictable, stable revenues and lower administrative costs.
