SNP to ditch the two-child cap as pre-polling day sweetner
Scottish Daily Express
|June 18, 2025
JOHN SWINNEY’S government has announced its first pre-Holyrood election giveaway — and it is using £155million of public cash to do so.
The SNP administration said it will effectively scrap the two-child benefit cap in Scotland from March 3 next year, just two months out from when Scots go to the polls.
The policy is actually supported by the majority of Scots, according to polling, with a total of 53% of those surveyed saying it should remain, alongside 31% who want it to be abolished and 16% who don’t know.
For years, the SNP has claimed it doesn’t have the power to eradicate the two-child cap.
The UK-wide policy prevents parents from claiming universal credit or child tax credit for more than two children unless there are mitigating circumstances.
