Search for 796 babies dumped in sewers

WORK is to start on the site of a notorious mother and baby home where nearly 800 youngsters were buried in the sewage system.

The grim task will last four weeks before a full-scale excavation to try to identify the remains of infants who died at the home between 1925 and 1961.

In 2014, research led by historian Catherine Corless indicated that 796 babies and young children were buried in a sewage system at the institution in Tuam, Co Galway.
