New Glasgow jail 'will not solve rising crisis'

THE SNP’s new ‘superprison’ in Glasgow will not solve the overcrowding crisis in Scottish jails, according to analysis.

HMP Glasgow is being built at a cost of £1 billion as a replacement for HMP Barlinnie. Expected to be completed in 2028, it will “help reduce reoffending,” and “contribute to less crime,” according to Justice Secretary Angela Constance.

But Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has branded it “not fit for purpose” after it emerged it would provide just 357 additional spaces for criminals.

Last month the number of people in custody in Scotland was 8,430, surpassing the previous record of 8,420 set in 2012.
