It can’t have been as scandalous as the unwelcome birthday surprise for his brother Andrew, which the monarch seemed determined to set aside as he continued with his planned engagements.

For Charles it was business as usual after he insisted “the law must take its course” following Andrew’s arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office, of which it was made clear the monarch was given no prior notice.
