Killie have been at a loss without Vassell

DEREK MCINNES insists it's no coincidence Kilmarnock have gone off the boil during captain Kyle Vassell's injury absence.

Killie have been at a loss without Vassell

Vassell hasn't kicked a ball since suffering a calf problem in the January 2 league victory against St Mirren at Rugby Park.

Killie have only won twice in the 11 games since then, causing them to slide to third-bottom in the Premiership table, just a point above the relegation play-off place.

Vassell is predominantly deployed as a target man and, with just three goals to his name in 26 appearances this season, he is not always a fans' favourite.

But manager McInnes sees the workhorse as an unsung hero whose physical presence brings his team-mates into play.

That's why he is desperately hoping a scan this week gives the 32-year-old the green light to resume full training and hasten his return to action.

McInnes said: “Vass is not everybody's cup of tea, I get that.

“But what his absence has highlighted to me is how much we've missed him and his importance.
