Glasgow to bring in 5% 'tourist tax' from 2027

GLASGOW has become the second Scottish council to approve a 'tourist tax' as it emerged the taxpayer will pick up the cost of the levy for MSPs staying in Edinburgh.

Visitors to our largest city will be charged a 5% visitor levy on every overnight stay from January 2027, working out at an average of £4.83 extra per night.

Unlike other European cities such as Lisbon and Rome, where only overseas visitors are charged, the tax will also apply to Scottish residents.

Glasgow City Council hopes to raise around £16million a year, which will go towards infrastructure improvements and events in the city.
