GLASGOW residents have criticised Celtic fans over their unofficial title party that turned parts of the city into a “playground”.

- By John Glover

Thousands of people descended on the Merchant City and Trongate areas to celebrate their club winning the Scottish Premiership trophy, with Hoops fans bringing the centre to a standstill.

Police Scotland issued an appeal prior to the event urging fans to avoid large gatherings following the game at Parkhead against St Mirren, which the club drew 1-1.

The club also warned fans against attending the unofficial title party.

However, a mass gathering described as “mayhem” went ahead.

Fans scaled the Mercat Tower build-ing, and dozens of supporters were seen holding green flares as they celebrated lifting a fourth successive league trophy in a row.

Some fans also scaled traffic lights.

Before kick-off, a potential flash point between fans and loyalists was avoided when they came face-to-face with an Orange Walk marching by a hotel packed with Hoops supporters.
