Flames shoot 50ft high as wildfires hit the Highlands

HUGE flames have been reported leaping from a wildfire which has been raging for two days.

The blaze broke out north of Aviemore leading to transport disruption.

It is said that flames up to 50 feet high have been spotted, leading to widespread destruction of trees and grassland.

The fire’s centre is near to Carrbridge and Dava between Grantown-on-Spey and Inverness.

Emergency services were alerted to reports of a large blaze next to the A939 at Dava early on Saturday evening.

As a result, it, with the nearby A940 and the B9007 between Duthil and Ferness, were all closed.

Police have urged the public to avoid the area and advised those living nearby to keep their windows and doors shut.

One witness, who tried to put the initial fire out, told BBC Scotland News it started south-east of Loch Allan.
