Concerns on policing as Government set to scrap crime commissioner role

Runcorn Weekly News

November 27, 2025

UNCERTAINTY surrounds the future of police accountability in Halton after the Government decided to scrap the role of police and crime commissioners.

Crime commissioners are elected roles who are supposed to act as the link between communities and the police, as well as hire and fire chief constables.

But the Government has scrapped the job with their powers due to pass to directly elected mayors or council leaders by 2028.

But the borough is in an almost unique position in that it is currently covered by Cheshire Police and falls under the jurisdiction of Dan Price - the current police and crime commissioner for Cheshire.
