THE leaders of a “world-first” £2.5 billion energy project in Nottinghamshire say they are starting a busy 2026 “as we mean to go on’.

A new energy plant which bosses believe could be the first of its kind is set to be built at the site of the part-demolished former West Burton power station near Retford.

The project, called Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP), is aiming to create a new type of energy using the same process that powers the sun.

More than 10,000 jobs are expected to be created , with hopes that the whole area could be transformed due to an increase in business and trade in North Nottinghamshire.
