Love, Data, and the Politics of Intimacy

In an age of biometric identification, algorithmic surveillance, and widespread digital footprints, the distinction between public governance and private life is fading. Among the many aspects of private life being monitored, love stands out.

It is not just a personal feeling; it serves as a social act that challenges the boundaries of caste, religion, gender, and class. The quiet regulation of romantic and sexual relationships is not merely a matter of state control; it reveals deeper moral anxieties rooted in both institutional structures and cultural practices.

In contemporary India, the state's monitoring of love does not always present itself as surveillance. It often appears in the guise of protection, tradition, and security. Laws, campaigns, and bureaucratic processes are used to justify scrutiny of interfaith or intercaste relationships. The term "Love Jihad," a conspiracy theory suggesting that Muslim men seduce Hindu women to convert them, is gaining support from institutions. Some states have passed or proposed laws allowing state intervention in interfaith marriages, which can include requirements for official permission and declarations. While these laws claim to protect women's rights or public order, they effectively criminalize romantic choices that do not conform to state norms.
