Carols and Cakes: The Heart warming Christmas Traditions

As Delhi's winter evenings grow colder, a cherished tradition brings light and warmth to Christian homes across the city: carol singing.
-
Groups of children, youths, and elders, armed with guitars and harmoniums, visit families to sing hymns celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. This joyful practice is spotted in neighbourhoods with significant Christian populations.Hosts welcome the singers with slices of Christmas cake, tea, snacks, and sometimes small donations, fostering a sense of community and generosity. In tougher times, carol groups quietly leave cakes for families in need-a gesture of quiet compassion that goes unspoken.
Timeless Hymns Echoing Through the City
Classic English carols like Silent Night ("Silent night, holy night / All is calm, all is bright") remain favourites, evoking the peaceful night of Jesus' birth. They're often heard in Delhi's historic churches, including the Holy Trinity Church in Turkman Gate (established in 1905). Brother Solomon George, a former pastor there, notes how these songs spread messages of joy and peace. Jingle Bells adds a playful touch, while Hindi hymns like "Bada din aaya har saal manaya / Yeshu ka janm hua sansaar mein aaya ... " reflect India's unique way of calling Christmas Bada Din (the Great Day).
Though some modern groups mix in film songs, traditionalists prefer the pure hymns. As noted author Joseph Gathia recalls from his days in Karol Bagh during the 1970s, Punjabi Christian families once sang carols in Punjabi too.
