'Red string' silence: go to court

Two months after complaints were made against a Muslim teacher forcing Hindu pupils to remove a red thread worn around the wrist (an affirmation of their faith), there has been silence from all concerned.

They complained to the principal, governing body, the KZN Department of Education, certain Hindu bodies, but thus far, they have had no joy, since “parents claim their complaints have been ignored while pupils continue to fear victimisation”.

Then there is the tardiness of the South African Hindu Maha Sabha (SAHMS). According to the POST, the SAHMS revealed that “on Monday, it had now escalated the matter to the Cultural, Religious and Linguistic (CRL) Rights Commission”.

So what were they waiting for since January 29, when the story broke?
