Political leaders demand probe into land transfers in eThekwini
Post
|June 04, 2025
POLITICAL leaders who joined Saturday’s protest are calling for a full investigation into all the land transfers in eThekwini involving sports fields and public spaces.
Visvin Reddy, member of Parliament for the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, said he felt compelled to attend the protest at the Eastbury sports field, and address the concerns of the community.
“When I served in council in 2019, I fought tirelessly to stop the transfer of sports fields for housing. The irate residents are rightfully demanding answers and accountability.
“Post 2019, several parks, sports fields, and even religious sites have reportedly been transferred to developers without proper consultation. This was allegedly done in violation of municipal regulations.
“Land was allegedly sold for a fraction of its market value under the false pretence of a lease-to-buy scheme meant for middle-income housing. Instead, this has become a national disgrace. We have been reliably informed that developers are selling these units for over R1 million,” he added.
Reddy said allegations about corrupt councillors were rife, and concerning.
“It has been alleged that some ward councillors are in cahoots with certain developers, aiding and abetting the transfer of land for private profit. These claims are serious and, if true, shocking.
