We need to do more for boys mental health

Renfrewshire parents are being urged to ensure their sons are accessing in-school counselling as new figures reveal a gender divide in mental health support.

Ross Greer MSP made the appeal after the statistics revealed boys make up just over a third of all those receiving support for their emotional wellbeing in school.

In the period from July 2023 to March 2024, 61 per cent of the 17,621 pupils using the service were girls, whereas 36 per cent were boys.

The in-school support was established in 2021 following the Covid-19 pandemic and a commitment from the Scottish Government to guarantee access to mental health support in school including counselling.
