Victims at heart of justice reform

The Victims, Witnesses and Justice Reform (Scotland) Bill is one of the most significant changes to our justice system in a generation.

At its heart is a simple principle: victims and witnesses must be listened to and supported every step of the way.

The bill abolishes the outdated "not proven" verdict, which for far too long left survivors and families feeling let down.

Its removal is a major victory for those who have campaigned tirelessly for change.

It also introduces 'Suzanne's Law' ensuring the parole board must consider the nondisclosure of victims' remains in murder cases.

Victims will now also receive clearer information about prosecutions and plea deals, helping to restore trust and transparency.

A new independent Victims and Witnesses Commissioner will be established to give survivors a strong voice at the heart of the justice system.
