Celebrate the tradition of fabulous festive illuminations

FESTIVE lights have been a tradition for hundreds of years.

Today, anything goes, from tiny twinkling fairy lights to giant glowing Santa and his reindeers. Wander around any neighbourhood and you will see people adding sparkle to their homes and gardens.

The tradition dates back to 17th-century Germany, where people decorated their trees with real candles, fixed onto branches. The flames were used to symbolise hope and warmth in the darkest, coldest months of the year.

As you can imagine, lighting a tree with real candles could be risky!
