Woman dies, man critically burnt after 'self-immolation'

Shrouded in mystery, the incident is suspected to be fallout of an extra-marital affair

In yet another disturbing case of self-immolation, a woman died and a man sustained critical burn injuries in Mayurbhanj district Saturday after the two reportedly set themselves on fire after getting doused in petrol.

The deceased was identified as Bharati Patra, 34, of Panasi village near Khiching under Raruan police limits, while the injured man is Harishankar Acharya, 38, of Chhanapal village under Rairangpur police limits.

The reason behind their self-immolation is yet to be ascertained but locals suspect a failed extramarital affair drove them to take the extreme step. Harishankar is currently undergoing treatment in critical condition. The incident has sparked tension in the locality.
