Waqf: No denotification of properties for now

A day after the Supreme Court indicated that it may stay some provisions of the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, the Centre Thursday assured it that waqf properties, including 'waqf by user', would not be denotified and that no appointment will be made to the Central Waqf Council and waqf boards till the next date of hearing.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, urged the top court that a law passed by Parliament 'with due deliberations' should not be stayed without hearing the government. The court granted a week's time to the Union government to file a preliminary response to the pleas challenging the validity of the Act and posted the matter to May 5. The passage of the Act has been marked by protests and loss of at least three lives in West Bengal, where Muslims account for over 27 per cent of the state's total population
