CANINE CONUNDRUM: As the stray dog population rises, fear, anger and compassion collide ina deeply moral dilemma. On one hand, communities demand protection, safer streets and ac- countability from local author- ities, especially after attacks on children and the elderly. On the other, reports of mass poisonings and illegal culling raise disturb- ing questions about humanity, legality and the value placed on animal life. Is fear an excuse for cruelty, or is inaction equally cruel to those living in constant anxiety? The Supreme Court has acknowledged the seriousness of the stray dog menace while firmly rejecting killing as a solu- tion, Caught between safety and compassion, society continues to wrestle with a question that has no easy answers: how far can we go to protect ourselves without losing our moral compass?

Hyderabad, Jan 14: A promise made during recent gram panchayat elections to eliminate the stray dog menace has led
to one of the largest reported cases of animal cruelty in Telangana, with at least 500 stray dogs allegedly killed by lethal injections over the past two weeks in multiple districts, police said.
Investigations by animal activists and police have uncovered mass killings of dogs in Warangal, Hanamkonda, Kamareddy and Jagtiyal districts. The dogs were allegedly poisoned or given lethal injections, after which their carcasses were buried in mass graves or dumped on village outskirts.
