While it is entirely legitimate to criticise the ruling government and its economic policies, equating a political critique with a sweeping condemnation of the entire nation is both irresponsible and detrimental to India’s global image
-
The essence of a democracy is not just in holding elections but in maintaining a dignified and constructive political discourse.
The recent controversy involving US President Donald Trump’s remark that the Indian economy is “dead,” and the public endorsement of this statement by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi has caused discomfort among many intellectuals and citizens. While it is entirely legitimate to criticise the ruling government and its economic policies, equating a political critique with a sweeping condemnation of the entire nation is both irresponsible and detrimental to India’s global image.
Criticism of the government is a fundamental part of democratic functioning. The Opposition has every right—and indeed the duty—to question economic mismanagement, policy failures, and governance lapses. But such criticism must be aimed at the ruling party or administration, not the country itself. A responsible leader, especially one who aspires to govern the nation, must make a clear distinction between condemning the government and maligning the country. When a foreign leader mocks our economy and an Indian leader echoes the remark without nuance or context, it appears as a betrayal of national interest. Patriotism does not mean silence on failures, but it demands loyalty to the truth and sensitivity to the country’s dignity.
