Baiting may make tigers less afraid of humans, experts warn

Once a private game reserve of the royal House of Jaipur, Ranthambore National Park and Tiger Reserve is one of the world's best known wilderness areas
Wildlife experts have raised alarms after a forest ranger was fatally attacked by a tiger in Rajasthan's Ranthambore Tiger Reserve Sunday.
The incident took place near Jogi Mahal, close to Zone-3, an area where authorities had been placing bait to support Tigress Arrowhead and her three cubs, as she was reportedly unable to hunt.
Experts fear this practice may have reduced the cubs' natural fear of humans. Repeated baiting from vehicles is believed to have conditioned the young tigers to associate humans with food. Preliminary findings suggest that one of Arrowhead's 20-month-old cubs may be responsible for both the recent fatality and the earlier killing of a 7-year-old boy near the Trinetra Ganesh Temple April 16.
