FOCUS HIGHER EDUCATION
The emergence of ChatGPT, a generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) application in November 2022, has led to unprecedented growth in the number of AI tools available to carry out several tasks in a relatively shorter time. Almost all top IT companies have invested heavily in the development of GenAI tools that run on models trained to perform tasks that take more time for us.
Every day, new models are emerging with additional features. These tools not only can generate text based on a specific prompt but are also able to create full videos and perform tasks as ‘agents’. While these tools offer unique advantages, they also raise questions related to their ethical use. Considering that some of these tools are available for free, both students and teachers use these without thinking much about the implications. Sometime back, a student at the Yale School of Management sued the University for being accused of using AI in a course submission that did not allow internet use. Considering the implications of GenAI tools, higher education institutions need to have policies governing their appropriate and ethical use, without compromising academic integrity.
