US President Donald Trump's decision to impose a 100 per cent tariff on branded and patented pharmaceutical imports from 1 October 2025 has sent shockwaves across the global pharma industry.

Even as Indian exports to the US are dominated by generics, which are excluded, Indian pharma stocks fell sharply on the announcement, reflecting investor concerns. Niche branded exports and high-value patented formulations could become uncompetitive, hurting margins. Companies with US manufacturing facilities may escape the tariffs, gaining an edge over rivals. Over the long term, the policy may pressure Indian firms to invest in US plants or diversify into other markets
