When Scalextric gets serious!
Nottingham Post
|April 08, 2025
IT'S a high-speed chase around the streets of Nottingham, past the Rock City and Wollaton Hall. The car is at full throttle with a police car in hot pursuit. After the cop car rams into me, I career off the road. It's over.
While it sounds like an episode of Traffic Cops, I won't be standing before magistrates on Monday morning charged with dangerous driving. Instead of a penalty I walk away with a medal because we're at the Racing Room's Scalextric circuit, one of the city's top attractions.
This isn't just any course this is Nottingham through and through.
This hidden gem, in a converted store room at the back of The Dragon pub in Long Row, pays homage to the city with landmarks such as the Council House, Trent Bridge, the City Ground, St Mary's Church and Sneinton Market's instantly recognisable architecture.
Some of Nottingham's top pubs make an appearance. Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, the Bell Inn, Ye Olde Salutation Inn, The Angel, Vat & Fiddle, Peggy's Skylight and Jamcafe are there and of, course, The Dragon itself.
Nottingham icons the Robin Hood statue and Goose Fair's famous cock on a stick stall, towered over by a big wheel - also feature. If you look closely, Jason Williamson from Sleaford Mods is on Rock City's stage.
Dotted around the racecourse are mini figures of locals, who regularly frequent The Dragon. There's Jim, Shawn, Luke, Rob, Carla, Stuart and the bar staff, along with landlady Aunit Sandhu, who can be spotted, hands on hips, in a red dress outside the pub. Other quirky touches include a trolley in the Trent.
