PLANS to redevelop a Cold War bunker and build more than 100 affordable homes around the site have been recommended for approval.

The Grade II listed bunker, known as the Nottingham War Rooms, is off Chalfont Drive in Beechdale.

Built in the 1950s, the bunker was designed to house a regional commissioner and government staff in the event of a nuclear war.

Under plans, 104 affordable homes would be built around the site, while the bunker itself could be transformed into a base for youth charity Base 51.

An old BBC recording studio, which would have broadcast news in the event of nuclear war, will be retained as a heritage asset, while food and drink outlets, a leisure facility, a media studio and an office space would be created.
