Man born to run a chippy could not be happier to take top prize

SO it's official. The best takeaway, as voted for by Post readers, has been decided. After weeks of nominations and vote-casting, Ruddington Fish Bar is the winner of the Notts Bites food and drink awards takeaway category, and owner Demetrios Lawton couldn't be happier.

Demetrios was born to be a chippy man. Raised in Stafford, he started peeling potatoes and serving customers from the age of 12 at his family's business.

Then in his teens he temporarily moved to Cyprus, a move he repeated in his late 20s, when he managed a McDonald's branch with his wife, Anna.

This experience, he says, helped him learn to manage a business.

"That gave us a big insight into the management of shops," he said.

The Lawtons took on the fish bar, a chippy that dates back at least four decades, in 2014.

Since then, Mr Lawton says it has become "totally different".
