Judge tells asylum seeker: 'You breached the hospitality this country has offered you'

AN asylum seeker who twice entered the UK illegally on a small boat from France has "breached the hospitality this country has offered" him, a judge has said.

District Judge Jonathan Taaffe questioned why Morteza Araghi was allowed to live in a hotel in Long Eaton when he arrived in Dover in August this year instead of being charged there and then by the police in Kent.

The 36-year-old told his solicitor that his conversion from Islam to Christianity in 2018 means that if he returns to his native country of Iran he will be executed. But on both occasions he came to England claiming asylum, he failed to engage in the application process.

Jailing him for a year, District Judge Jonathan Taaffe said: “It seems to me that on two occasions you made a conscious decision to come to the United Kingdom without documentation.
