Family distraught as passport changes could halt trip

A FAMILY have been placed in an impossible situation after booking a trip costing thousands from their home in New Zealand back to the UK.

- By LOUIS CORBETT

Fraser Smith, 59, moved from Hucknall to Cambridge, New Zealand, 21 years ago, and every three years he and his family return to visit family and to go to Notts County games. But that tradition has been put in jeopardy this year by new immigration rules on British dual nationals entering the UK with a foreign passport.

Previously, dual nationals could use their foreign passport to travel in and out of the UK, but since February 25, they must either present their British passport or a new certificate of entitlement alongside their foreign passport.

Confusingly, neither British passports nor certificates of entitlement are automatically issued to people who obtain British citizenship, meaning some dual nationals have never applied for them.
