Ex-policeman blames mental issues for his drunk attack

FORMER OFFICER GUILTY OF GROSS MISCONDUCT FOR PUNCHING MAN
A POLICE officer who launched an “unprovoked drunken assault” on a man in Mansfield said his behaviour was caused by his mental health issues.
The former constable (he has since resigned) threw two punches at a member of the public while off duty on a night out in the town on October 22, 2023.
A gross misconduct hearing, held yesterday, found that the officer, whose identity has been protected, would have been dismissed by the force. Despite attempts to have his anonymity lifted by the Post, hearing chair Leicestershire Police chief constable David Sandall decided it should remain in place due to his “serious mental health issues resulting from prior military service”.
The former officer received a criminal caution for common assault after the attack outside a bar just after midnight.
