Chippies with oysters, chocolate and wine!

IT'S easy to assume that all chippies are the same - the fryer stocked with perfectly crisp chips, the fridge near the back packed full of dandelion and burdock.

Chippies with oysters, chocolate and wine!

There's an obvious formula to fish and chip shops that has continued to be popular for decades - and if something isn't broken, why fix it?

But John Molnar - owner of the Cod's Scallops fish and chip shops in Carrington, Wollaton, Wilford and Long Eaton - doesn't run that kind of chippie.

Mr Molnar, who comes from a traditional chef background, says his takeaways food is all about variety and bringing something different to customers each time.

Alongside the classics like battered sausages, chip butties and, of course, fish and chips,.

The Cod's Scallops sells a variety of other seafood and fish - ranging from prawns to oysters.

The Cod's Scallops is one of four contenders in our Notts Bites awards for best takeaway.

It's far from the first accolade for the Cod's Scallops - the lineup of takeaways has won various awards and, in 2020, the original Wollaton branch, in Bramcote Lane, was crowned the best in the UK.

So what is it people that keeps bringing people back?

For John, it's two things - quality and variety - and that's been his approach since his original shop opened in 2011.

"When we started, everything was driven by the quality of ingredients and that's not changed," he told the Post.
