Call for action to tackle lake's 'rampant' weeds

A COUNTY councillor claims anglers have been "abandoned" due to inaction over invasive weeds at a popular fishing spot.

Balderton Lake has seen an influx of unwanted plants on its surface in recent months, stoking fears they could cause fish to suffocate.

A petition has been launched by Johno Lee, Conservative county councillor for Balderton, who said the weeds could cause "grave" damage to the ecosystem.

Balderton Parish Council, which owns the lake, said it was trying to deal with the issue but warned there was no "magic solution". It said there was little that can be done about the weeds, believed to be a mixture of duckweed and curly pond weed, due to birds currently nesting at the lake.
