JUDGE-LED PUBLIC INQUIRY INTO ATTACKS WILL START IN FEBRUARY

- By JOSHUA HARTLEY

A minute's silence for 'terrible loss of life' as search for truth begins

THE chair of the public inquiry into the Nottingham attacks led a poignant moment of silence, marking the first step of the examination of missed opportunities in the lead-up to Valdo Calocane's killings.

Her Honour Deborah Taylor opened the first preliminary hearing at Mary Wood House, London, yesterday, before asking the assembled inquiry participants - including the families of the three people killed by Calocane in his June 13, 2023, rampage - to all partake in a minute of silence to reflect the “terrible loss of life” and the serious injuries inflicted on three survivors.

Rachel Langdale KC, counsel for the inquiry, then laid out that a mammoth effort had been made to gather evidence for the public inquiry, which will start in February next year. She explained the purpose of the judge-led inquiry was to “search for the truth”.

So far 50,000 documents had been obtained as evidence, Ms Longdale said.
