|January 16, 2026
From India's IT majors reporting mixed quarterly results to retail inflation climbing back on narrowing food price deflation, net direct tax collections falling short of Budget targets, US tariff threats casting uncertainty over India's Chabahar Port investments, and 2025 ranking among the three warmest years on record, here's this week's news in numbers.
MIXED PERFORMANCE
INDIA'S TOP IT services companies delivered mixed performance in the third quarter of FY26, with revenue growth outpacing net profits as the sector grappled with the impact of new labour codes.
Among the top three IT firms that have released their earninbs, HCL Technologies led the pack with revenue rising 13.3% year-on-year. Infosys followed with a near 9% rise, while TCS posted a more modest 5% growth.
However, net profits took a significant hit across the board due to the impact of the government's new labour codes. TCS saw its net profit decline near 14%, while HCL Tech recorded an 11% drop. Infosys reported a modest decline of 2.2%.
FOOD EFFECTINDIA'S RETAIL inflation rose to 1.3% in December from 0.7% a month earlier. The key trigger was food: while food inflation remained negative, the pace of price decline had slowed. Core inflation also edged up.
