Shipping likely to get infra status within a fortnight

The government is set to accord infrastructure status to the shipping industry, with a notification likely within a fortnight, two people in the know told Mint.
An infrastructure status will help shipping firms get cheaper, longer-term bank funding, spurring purchases from Indian shipyards and boosting domestic vessel ownership, they said.
The move is seen crucial to India's ambition to be among top five countries in shipbuilding and ownership by 2047. It now ranks 18th in ship ownership and 22nd in shipbuilding.
