roughly 4,000 electric buses were sold in India, compared to approximately 63,000 diesel-powered ones.

The disparity in the truck sector is even more pronounced; sales of medium and heavy electric trucks incentivized under the PM E-Drive scheme reached only 496 units by December 2025, while diesei-run counterparts exceeded 291,000 units.
The primary barrier to adoption remains the sticker price. Subsidies for commercial vehicles are vital because the price of an electric truck or battery-powered bus is roughly 2.5 times that of a vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine (ICE).
“India’s ability to achieve 30% vehicle electrification by 2030 will hinge on one defining variable: whether the commercial segment scales fast enough to pull the rest of the ecosystem with it,” said Kunal Mundra, founder and chief executive of Astranova Mobility, an EV financier.
