South Korea's Opposition moves to impeach President

South Korea's political landscape was rocked Wednesday as Opposition parties filed a motion to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over his abrupt and controversial declaration of martial law.

The move followed a tumultuous night when heavily armed troops encircled the National Assembly, forcing lawmakers to climb walls to enter the chamber and vote unanimously to annul Yoon's order.

The impeachment motion, jointly submitted by the Democratic Party and five smaller Opposition groups, could go to a vote as early as Friday. Removing Yoon from office would require the support of two-thirds of the 300-seat parliament and approval by at least six of the nine justices on the Constitutional Court.
