PM Modi says stay calm, alert for possible aftershocks

Quake of 4.0-magnitude hits Delhi, tremors felt across NCR

Strong tremors were felt in the national capital and adjoining regions early on Monday as an earthquake of 4.0 magnitude struck the area, prompting people to rush out of their homes in panic. There were no immediate reports of any damage or injuries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people to remain calm and follow safety precautions while staying alert for possible aftershocks. "Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation," Modi posted on X.

The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that the earthquake occurred at 5:36 am with a focal depth of five kilometers.

The epicentre was located in the Jheel Park area of Dhaula Kuan, where some residents reported hearing a loud sound as the ground shook.

Experts noted that shallow earthquakes, typically originating five to ten kilometers below the surface, tend to cause more pronounced shaking than deeper ones. The Jheel Park region has experienced smaller quakes in the past, including a 3.3 magnitude earthquake in 2015, an NCS official said.

Delhi Police took to X to reassure citizens, stating, “We hope you all are safe, Delhi!” and advising residents to call the emergency 112 helpline if needed.
