VATICAN CITY: Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Catholic Church, will be buried Saturday following three days of lying in state at St. Peter's Basilica. The funeral is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in St. Peter's Square and will be presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, dean of the College of Cardinals.
The 88-year-old pontiff died Monday after suffering a stroke that led to heart failure. He had recently returned to his Santa Marta residence after spending over a month in hospital due to pneumonia.
