Schools up to class 8 reopen after 9 days

NEW DELHI: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, has moved the ‘Supreme Court challenging his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) and seeking his release, even as Ladakh Lt Governor Kavinder Gupta on Friday reviewed the security situation in violence-hit Leh, where schools up to Class 8 reopened after a nine-day closure.

Wangchuk was detained on September 26, two days after protests demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh left four people dead and 90 injured. He is currently lodged in Jodhpur jail, Rajasthan.

Angmo, represented by senior lawyer Vivek Tankha and advocate Sarvam Ritam Khare, has questioned the decision to invoke the NSA against her husband. Filinga habeas corpus writ, she sought urgent listing of the petition and a direction to the Ladakh administration to produce Wangchuk before the court.

‘The plea also asked for immediate access to the detainee and the quashing of the detention order.
