India-US trade talks may extend to August 1 as tariff deadline looms

As India and the United States inch toward an interim trade agreement, hopes for a conclusion before the initial July 9 deadline appear to be fading.

WASHINGTON: However, Washington has indicated that talks may continue until August 1, amid growing pressure from the Trump administration on trading partners to finalize deals or face steeper tariffs.

"We're going to be very busy over the next 72 hours," US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNN, adding that President Trump would begin issuing letters to various nations. "If you don't move things along, then on August 1, you will boomerang back to your April 2 tariff level."

According to Indian officials, discussions are ongoing despite challenges in finalising the deal.
