Four decades after the world's worst industrial disaster, Madhya Pradesh completes scientific disposal of Union Carbide's toxic waste, paving the way for remembrance, redevelopment and a safer future under judicial supervision

FROM TRAGEDY TO TRANSFORMATION

Nearly four decades after the night of December 2-3, 1984, when a deadly leak of Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) gas changed Bhopal forever, Madhya Pradesh has taken a decisive step toward closure, accountability, and renewal.

Under the leadership of Dr Mohan Yadav, the state has successfully completed the scientific disposal of toxic chemical waste from the Union Carbide factory premises—without environmental damage or loss of human life.

Acting under the directions of the Hon'ble High Court, the state government has ensured that nearly 40 years of hazardous legacy has finally been addressed. What once stood as a symbol of neglect is now being prepared for planned development, remembrance, and renewal.

Inspecting the Union Carbide factory premises in Arif Nagar, Bhopal, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav underlined the significance of the moment by entering the core area without a safety mask—symbolically affirming that the air and environment at the site are now safe. It marked a first in Madhya Pradesh's history and sent a powerful message: the toxic past has been responsibly dealt with.
