Unconfirmed reports suggest fatalities could be as high as 276
-
The death toll from the devastating landslides that struck Kerala’s Wayanad district on Tuesday has climbed to at least 190, with nearly 200 people still missing. The toll is expected to rise. Meanwhile, some unconfirmed reports suggested 276 fatalities.
The tragedy, triggered by torrential rains, has left the picturesque district in a state of shock and despair as rescue efforts continue under challenging conditions.
Kerala Revenue Minister K Rajan confirmed the grim statistics, stating that the victims include 27 children and 76 women. Over 225 others have been injured, primarily in the worst-hit areas of Mundakkai and Chooralmala.
The Wayanad district administration reports that 9,328 people have been relocated to 91 relief camps, with 2,328 individuals from 578 families displaced by the Chooralmala and Meppadi landslides now housed in nine camps.
Rescue operations face significant challenges due to the treacherous terrain, destroyed infrastructure, and a shortage of heavy equipment. Despite these obstacles, 1,300 personnel from various agencies and the armed forces are carrying out joint searchand-rescue operations, braving harsh weather conditions and difficult terrain.
