Aims to maximise organ utilisation and improve transplant success rates

In a significant move to improve organ transplantation processes across India, the Union Health Ministry has unveiled its first ever Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the seamless transport of human organs.

These comprehensive guidelines cover various modes of travel, including air, road, rail, and even metro systems, aiming to maximise the utilisation of precious organs and offer hope to countless patients awaiting life-saving transplants.

Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra emphasised the importance of these SOPs, stating: "By streamlining the organ transport process, we aim to maximise the utilisation of precious organs and offer hope to countless patients awaiting life-saving transplants.

These SOPS are a roadmap for organ retrieval and transplant institutions across the country, ensuring adherence to best practices and quality standards." The new guidelines address a critical challenge in organ transplantation: the need to transport live organs between hospitals when donors and recipients are in different locations, either within the same city or across different cities.

Given the limited shelf life of organs, every minute counts in ensuring successful transplantation.
