Ministers to consider plan to shut school sixth form

PLANS to close the sixth form at a Valleys school will be considered by the Welsh Government.

The proposals for Mountain Ash Comprehensive School, which would see pupils transferring to Aberdare Community School by September 2026, follow concerns over the viability and sustainability of the sixth form.

Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) Council has said the sixth form is inefficient and the curriculum choice is restricted, with funds being used to subsidise a shortfall due to small class sizes.

The closure would mean no new year 12 pupils would be admitted this September.

Under Section 50 of the School Standards and Organisation (Wales) Act 2013, proposals which affect sixth form education require approval by Welsh ministers.
