The spiritual foundation of the Filipino soldier during Holy Week

As the nation observed the solemnity of Holy Week, a profound period of reflection and renewal for many Filipinos, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) reaffirmed its commitment not only to defend the nation’s sovereignty, but also to uphold the values that make its service noble and humane. For the Filipino soldier, Holy Week is more than just a religious observance—it is a reminder of the spiritual and moral compass that must guide every action, every mission, and every decision in and out of uniform.

- LT. GEN. JAIME S. DE LOS SANTOS, AFP (RET)

The AFP, through its Chaplain Service and Values Formation Program, continued to strengthen its efforts to build a military that is makatao, makadiyos, and maka-bayan—humane, God-fearing, and patriotic. These values are at the heart of the soldier’s duty, and Holy Week provided a sacred space for rekindling this spiritual foundation.

The spiritual core of the Filipino soldier

The integration of spiritual development into military life is a cornerstone of AFP’s internal transformation. Holy Week services, reflections, and activities held across military camps were not mere traditions—they are an embodiment of a soldier’s personal and collective journey toward inner peace, integrity, and purpose.

Through Holy Masses, Stations of the Cross, confessions, and ecumenical gatherings, soldiers were reminded that their strength is not only drawn from discipline and training, but also from faith. It is this faith that molds them into warriors of peace—ready to protect human dignity, uphold justice, and reject violence and oppression.

Respect for human rights rooted in spirituality
