Manila Electric Company (Meralco) announced that it has partnered with a state-owned French electric utility firm to explore whether nuclear energy is a viable option in the Philippines.

- By GABRIELL CHRISTEL GALANG

In a statement, Meralco has entered a two-year memorandum of cooperation (MOC) with Electricité de France SA (EDF) to explore nuclear possibilities in the Philippines through site activities and power system integration, and to determine the economic feasibility of nuclear power in the country’s energy mix.

For EDF’s part, the French power firm would deliver training sessions on nuclear reactor technology and nuclear project management, while also assisting Meralco to produce a program dedicated for nuclear programs.
