N THE week when the 80th anniversary of the Fifth Pan-African Congress at Chorlton-on-Med-lock Town Hall was commemorated, it was ironic to read the letter in Viewpoints (‘Why pay these reparations?’ October 18).

The writer, like many previously, negates the experiences of chattel slaves, Africans who were shipped across the Atlantic for three hundred years and treated in the same way as household goods, animals or other belongings that could be used and sold, through the generations, at the will of their owners.
